It tastes like Caesar salad and pizza fell in love and made the perfect sandwich baby. If you love Caesar salads and sandwiches as much as I do, you need to make this ASAP!

How to Make Crispy Tofu Caesar Sandwiches

Part 1: Roasted Garlic Calabrian Butter

  1. Prep the Garlic: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice about ¼-inch off the top of a whole garlic bulb to expose the cloves. Place it on a piece of foil, drizzle with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Wrap tightly in foil.
  2. Roast: Bake on the middle rack for 40 to 45 minutes until the cloves are soft and golden.
  3. Make the Butter: Once cooled slightly, squeeze the roasted garlic cloves into a bowl. Add the softened vegan butter, 2 tablespoons of Calabrian chili paste, 1 tablespoon of vegan parmesan, and dried oregano. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  4. Toast the Rolls: Spread this mixture generously over all sides of your sub rolls. Place them on a baking sheet and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 10 to 15 minutes until crisp and golden. Watch closely so they don’t burn!

Part 2: Crispy Tofu

  1. Prep the Tofu: Slice your 16-ounce block of super-firm tofu into ½-inch squares.
  2. Set Up the Station:
    • Bowl 1: All-purpose flour, salt, and black pepper.
    • Bowl 2: Vegetable broth or non-dairy milk.
    • Bowl 3: Panko breadcrumbs mixed with ¼ cup vegan parmesan shreds.
  3. Bread the Tofu: Dip each tofu square into the flour (shake off excess), then the liquid, and finally press firmly into the breadcrumb mixture to coat. Place on a plate.
  4. Fry: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the tofu in batches for 3 to 5 minutes per side until deeply golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.

Part 3: Assembly

  1. Dress the Greens: Toss your shredded romaine lettuce with 1 cup of Caesar dressing.
  2. Build: On the bottom half of a toasted roll, pile a generous amount of dressed romaine. Top with 2 slices of crispy tofu.
  3. Finish: Drizzle 1 to 2 tablespoons of the remaining Caesar dressing over the tofu and sprinkle with extra vegan parmesan shreds. Cap with the top bun and serve immediately.

Tips and FAQs

  • Use Super-Firm Tofu: This recipe calls for super-firm tofu because it’s already pressed and saves time. If you only have extra firm or firm tofu, press it for 30 minutes beforehand to remove excess water.
  • Don’t Skip the Roasting: Roasting the garlic transforms it from sharp and pungent to sweet and mellow. This depth of flavor is crucial for the butter. You can roast the garlic up to 3 days in advance.
  • The Breading Station: Set up your three bowls in a line: Flour -> Liquid -> Panko. Dip with one hand for dry ingredients and the other for wet to keep things tidy.
  • Oil Temperature: If you don’t have a thermometer, test the oil by dropping a single breadcrumb in. If it sizzles immediately and floats, it’s ready. If it sinks, wait. If it burns instantly, it’s too hot.
  • Toast the Rolls: Even though the rolls are baked with butter, giving them a quick toast under the broiler right before assembling adds an extra layer of crunch that prevents sogginess.

Can I make this crispy Caesar sandwich gluten-free?

Absolutely! Swap the all-purpose flour for a gluten-free blend, use GF panko breadcrumbs, and ensure your sub rolls are certified gluten-free.

How long does the Calabrian butter last?

You can store the leftover roasted garlic Calabrian butter in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. It’s amazing on toast, roasted vegetables, or pasta!

Can I bake or air-fry the tofu instead of frying it?

Yes! For baking, bake the breaded tofu at 400°F (200°C) on a parchment-lined sheet for 20 to 25 minutes, flipping halfway through. It won’t be quite as crispy as fried, but still delicious! Alternatively, for air-frying, preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Arrange the breaded tofu slices in a single layer in the basket, ensuring they aren’t touching so the hot air can circulate properly. Lightly spray the tops with cooking oil or avocado oil spray to help the panko turn golden and crisp. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes, flipping the slices halfway through the cooking time. Keep an eye on them during the last few minutes, as air fryers vary in power; you want the coating to be deep golden brown and crispy.

What if I can’t find Calabrian chili paste?

You can substitute it with a mix of crushed red pepper flakes and a little tomato paste for color, though the flavor profile will be slightly different. Harissa is another good alternative for a spicy, earthy kick. Or simply sub it with your favorite spicy marinara sauce!

Ingredients

Roasted Garlic Calabrian Butter:

  • 1 large bulb fresh garlic
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 tablespoons vegan butter, slightly softened
  • 2 tablespoons Calabrian chili paste
  • 1 tablespoon vegan parmesan
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano

For the Crispy Tofu and Sandwiches:

  • 1 16-ounce block of super-firm tofu, sliced into ½”- inch squares
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper
  • ½ cup vegetable broth or non-dairy milk
  • ¼ cup vegan parmesan shreds, plus more for garnishing, optional
  • 1 cup vegetable oil, for frying
  • 4 sub rolls,
  • 3 cups romaine lettuce, shredded
  • 1 ½ cups Caesar dressing homemade or storebought

Instructions

  • First, roast the garlic for the Calabrian chili roasted garlic butter. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  • Cut off about ¼” – inch of the garlic head to expose the top of the bulb. Place the head on a piece of foil cut side up.
  • Drizzle on 1 tablespoon of olive oil, followed by a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
  • Wrap the garlic loosely with foil and roast on the middle rack of the oven until soft and golden brown, 40 to 45 minutes.
  • When the garlic is done roasting, reduce the oven temperature to 375°F
  • Squeeze the roasted garlic into a bowl with the rest of the roasted garlic Calabrian butter ingredients, mixing well to combine.
  • Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly over all sides of the rolls and place on a prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake the rolls until the butter is melted and the bread is slightly crisp around the edges, 10 to 15 minutes (check at the 10-minute mark to make sure they’re not burning).
  • Meanwhile, prepare the breading station for the crispy tofu.
  • Place the flour in a shallow bowl with the salt and pepper and mix to combine.
  • In a second shallow bowl, add the broth or milk.
  • In a third, add the breadcrumbs and parmesan and mix to combine.
  • To bread the tofu pieces, dip each slice into the flour, shaking off an excess, then into the milk, and finally into the breadcrumb/parmesan mixture. Continue until each piece of tofu is fully coated. Place the coated pieces of tofu onto a plate and set aside.
  • Heat the oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot (you’ll know when you sprinkle in a few panko breadcrumbs and it begins to sizzle immediately) gently place the tofu into the pan and fry until golden and crispy, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer the crispy tofu to a paper towel lined plate.
  • Next, toss the shredded romaine with 1 cup of the Caesar dressing
  • To assemble the sandwiches, pile some Caesar salad on a toasted roll, followed by 2 slices of crispy tofu. Top the tofu slices with 1-2 tablespoons of the reserved Caesar dressing and some parmesan shreds. Enjoy!

Idk how many more ways I can word how delicious your recipes are, girl! 😅 Yet another incredible one for the rotation! I’m super lazy so I used 3 impossible chik’n patties for 2 sammies vs the tofu. So good I made it 2 times in a week 🤤 The flavors are amazing and perfect for summer! The butter made enough to make approx 5-6 sub rolls for me(but that all depends on the length you buy) & it was even BETTER after a few days of marinating. I also could not find the calabrian paste so subbed with spicy harrisa paste ☆10/10 recommend!☆ I can’t wait to make this for friends & family!!!!
