Silken Tofu with Spicy Sesame Sauce

If you’re looking for a quick, refreshing, and flavor-packed meal, this Silken Tofu with Spicy Sesame Sauce is about to become one of your go-to recipes. Ready in less than 5 minutes, it’s the perfect dish for busy weeknights, light lunches, or hot summer days when turning on the stove is the last thing you want to do. Cool, silky tofu is topped with a creamy, spicy sesame sauce that’s rich, nutty, savory, and just the right amount of tangy, proving that simple ingredients can create incredible flavor!

Cold tofu dishes have been enjoyed across East Asia for centuries. In China, chilled tofu preparations are commonly served as liángbàn dòufu, featuring soft tofu dressed with soy sauce, sesame oil, aromatics, and chili. Japan has its own beloved version called hiyayakko, where chilled silken tofu is served with toppings like grated ginger, scallions, bonito flakes, soy sauce, or sesame. In Korea, similar tofu dishes are often paired with spicy soy-based or gochugaru-seasoned sauces. While each cuisine has its own variations, they all celebrate the same idea: letting the delicate, creamy texture of fresh tofu shine with bold, flavorful toppings.

This version draws inspiration from those classic dishes by pairing delicate silken tofu with a rich, spicy sesame sauce that comes together in just a few minutes using pantry staples. It’s an effortless recipe that’s naturally vegan, packed with plant-based protein, and ideal for anyone looking for a satisfying meal without spending much time in the kitchen.

Although I love serving this dish cold (especially during the warmer months) it’s just as delicious warm. If you prefer, you can gently steam or microwave the silken tofu before adding the sauce, creating a cozy variation that’s perfect when the weather cools down. I’ve included simple instructions for both methods in the recipe notes, so you can enjoy this dish however you like!

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Spicy Sesame Sauce:

In a small bowl, whisk together the Chinese sesame paste, soy sauce, sriracha (or chili oil), toasted sesame oil, 1 teaspoon agave, and fresh minced garlic until thoroughly combined. The sauce should be smooth and pourable.

Taste & Adjust: If you prefer it sweeter, add the remaining 1-2 teaspoons of agave. If too thick, thin with room temperature water 1 teaspoon at a time until desired consistency is reached.

2. Prepare the Tofu:

Drain the silken tofu gently. Transfer it to a shallow serving bowl. You can serve it whole, cut into cubes, or leave it intact depending on preference.

3. Assemble and Garnish:

Pour the spicy sesame sauce evenly over the tofu. Top with your preferred garnishes: toasted sesame seeds, crushed peanuts, green onions, bird’s eye chilies, or fried garlic.

4. Serve and Enjoy!

Enjoy right away for best texture and flavor!

Tips and FAQs

  • Use silken tofu, not firm tofu: Silken tofu has an ultra-smooth, custard-like texture that’s perfect for this dish. Soft tofu can also work, but it won’t be quite as delicate.
  • Drain the tofu well: Carefully pour off any excess liquid from the package before transferring the tofu to a serving plate. This prevents the sauce from becoming watery.
  • Handle the tofu gently: Silken tofu is very fragile, so use a wide spatula or carefully slide it onto the plate to keep it intact.
  • Whisk the sauce until smooth: Sesame paste can be thick, so gradually whisk in water until the sauce is creamy and pourable. This helps it coat the tofu evenly.
  • Serve with rice: While delicious on its own, steamed jasmine rice or short-grain rice turns this into a more filling meal.

What is silken tofu?

Silken tofu is a Japanese-style tofu with a smooth, creamy, custard-like texture. Unlike regular tofu, it’s not pressed, so it contains more moisture and is much more delicate.

Can I use soft or firm tofu instead?

Yes. Soft tofu is the closest substitute and will provide a similar creamy texture. Medium or firm tofu will create a different texture but will still taste delicious with the spicy sesame sauce.

Is this recipe served hot or cold?

Traditionally, this dish is served cold, making it perfect for warm weather. However, you can also gently steam or microwave the tofu if you prefer a warm version.

Can I make the sesame sauce ahead of time?

Yes! The sauce can be prepared up to 3 to 4 days in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Give it a quick stir before serving, as it may thicken over time.

How long does this recipe keep?

This dish is best enjoyed the day it’s made. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Keep in mind that the tofu may release additional liquid as it sits.

What’s the difference between sesame paste and tahini?

Although they look similar, they’re made from different types of sesame seeds. Chinese sesame paste is made from roasted sesame seeds, giving it a darker color and a richer, toastier flavor. Tahini is typically made from hulled, lightly roasted or raw sesame seeds, resulting in a milder, lighter taste. Tahini works in a pinch, but Chinese sesame paste provides the most authentic flavor.
